Oceania

  • Total # of Teams = 11
  • # of Teams that Qualify = 0.5
  • # of Rounds = 3 and a playoff (for the 0.5 slot)

Round 1

The 4 lowest ranked teams (according to the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking) are grouped together in a round-robin, home-and-away series where points are calculated for wins (3), ties (1) and losses (0).  The group winner advances to Round 2.

Round 2

The winner from Round 1 joins the 7 other teams to form 8 total teams.  These 8 teams are drawn into 2 groups of 4 teams in a round-robin, home-and-away series where points are calculated for wins (3), ties (1) and losses (0).  The top 3 teams from each group advance to Round 3.

*Note*: The top 2 teams from each group in this round play a single-game semifinal (A1 vs B2, B1 vs. A2). The winners of the semifinal play a single-game final and the winner of this ‘final’ advances to the Confederations Cup (Russia, 2017).

Round 3

The 6 teams from Round 2 are placed into 2 groups of 3 in a round-robin, home-and-away series where points are calculated for wins (3), ties (1) and losses (0). The winner from each group plays one another in an aggregate home-and-away series.  The winner from this home-and-away matchup advances to the Playoff Round.

Playoff Round

For Oceania, this Playoff Round is a home-and-away, aggregate score matchup with the participant from CONEMBOL.  The winner of this Playoff Round qualifies for Russia 2018!
